According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, students are prepared for their life after graduation by learning from high school teachers. Many classes and tests are required to become a licensed teacher. They do much more than just teach. Being a teacher involves many more activities.There are many steps to becoming a high school teacher. The steps can be different depending on each state. Typically, a bachelor’s degree is re quired as well as the completion of a preparation program that is usually gained through student teaching (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). After obtaining the degree and completing the teacher preparation program, a background check must be passed and a general teaching certification test is given to see if the student has the knowledge to teach the subject. On the California University of Pennsylvania’s website, there is a list of the courses each college student at this university takes as a secondary education mathematics major. In the first semester, there are six different courses to take which includes: First-Year Seminar, English Composition I, General Psychology, Pre-Calculus, and two general education courses (Mathematics Secondary Education Bachelor Degree Pennsylvania). In the second semester, an English Course, Calculus I, Special Education Foundations and Collaboration, Adolescent Psychology, and one general education course are required. Introduction to Secondary Education, Standards-based Education in Secondary Education, Discrete Mathematics, Assessment and Positive Behavior Interventions, and Calculus II are the courses taken in the third semester. The further into college education the student goes, the classes will pertain more to the major, so many math classes will be taken. In the fourth semester, History of Mathematics, Teaching in a Multicultural Society, Technology for Math, Technology in Teaching and Learning, and Theory of Equations will be taken. The fifth semester contains courses on Instructional Strategies in Secondary Education, Content Area Literacy, Technology Integration in Secondary Education Geometry, and Calculus III. Classroom Management, Assessments and Interventions in Secondary Education, Statistical Analysis I, Mathematical Modeling, and Linear Algebra I are taken during the sixth semester. The seventh semester has five courses including, Teaching of Mathematics, Supporting English Language Learners, Evidence-based Practices for Secondary Education, Abstract Algebra I, and a math elective. In the final semester at California University of Pennsylvania, Professional Practices in Secondary Education is taken and for the rest of the time, the college student will undergo a student teaching practicum.According to U.S. News, Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan is the best secondary education program in the United States (Best Secondary Teacher Education Programs). The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor falls right behind MSU and is ranked as the second best school. Finally, the third best secondary education school in the United States is the University of Wisconsin at Madison. High school teachers are involved in many activities. They have to plan lessons pertaining to the subject that they teach, and they also have to evaluate students’ work (What High School Teachers Do). Each teacher must instruct students and prepare for standardized tests. They may have to talk to parents about how their children are acting, or watch over students outside of the classroom like in detention or lunch. Enforcing rules of the school and creating rules for the classroom are also big parts of being a high school teacher.When majoring in secondary education, the student must realize that becoming a high school math teacher does not just involve teaching students. It involves much more including evaluating students and enforcing rules. There are more steps to becoming a teacher than just going to college, which includes student teaching. High school teachers are important to help students prepare for their life after graduation.
