Depression is a serious mental
illness that negatively affects your mood, thoughts and actions. The effects
that it can have on someone’s life can range from being mild, constantly
feeling down or low, to being very severe, and possibly resulting in the individual
feel as if their life isn’t worth living anymore. It can affect your day to day
life and might result in you not being able to complete basic tasks like
getting up in the morning to go to school or work. People who are depressed
often lose interest in activities or hobbies that they used to enjoy and can’t
concentrate or focus. Not having the ability to focus can lead to them falling
behind at school or at work, which will then make them feel worse and can
result in them feeling even less motivated than they before. In the long term,
this could possibly have some lasting negative effects on their future as they
may not end up getting the grades they need at school, or getting fired from a
job for not being able to commit to it. Luckily depression can be treated and
if someone is able to get the right help they are able to overcome it.

What are the main causes of depression?

There are many causes of depression,
and it varies in each case. Some of the main causes include: stressful events,
personality, family history, giving birth, loneliness, alcohol and drugs and
illnesses. However, it can also be a combination of these causes or something
else altogether. Depression is commonly described as being like a ‘downward
spiral’, different events and causes end up building up on top of each other,
leading to someone feelings incredibly low and out of control. Stressful or
traumatic events play a major part in a lot of cases of depression. In 2013 a
group of psychologists from the University of Liverpool conducted a study where
they analysed the responses of over 32,000 I people between the ages of 18 and
85. They gathered their information from the results of a test launched by the
BBC, called the ‘Stress Test’. Their results concluded that the largest cause
of anxiety and depression in the UK are traumatic or stressful life events,
followed by family history. When you are under long term stress your brain
releases increased amounts of a chemical called cortisol and decreased amounts
of a chemical called serotonin. Due to the brain not releasing the correct
amount of hormones such as cortisol and serotonin it won’t be functioning
normally, which over time will lead to depression. Cortisol is released as a
response to stress and fear, your body will go into a mechanism called fight or
flight. When you are under the influence of this mechanism your brain does not
think rationally about the situation you are in and will either do anything to
get rid of it, fight it, or pretend that it’s not happening. This can affect
people quite drastically as they end up being in a state of permanent stress
and anxiety, which is a huge contribute to depression. Unbalanced amounts of
serotonin can have a lot of effects on the body; for example, mood, appetite,
sleep and memory. Many psychologists believe that if your body is not producing
enough serotonin your mood will become lower. Another large cause of depression
is family history. If someone in your family has been depressed or had other
psychiatric problems before then this can potentially increase the chance of
you being depressed. Children whose parents or siblings are depressed are at a
higher risk of major depressive disorder, than children whose parents are not
depressed. According to a study done by Stanford university, a person in this
situation could potentially have a 2 or 3 times greater risk of developing
depression in comparison to someone who does not have a family member dealing
with depression.

What are the symptoms of depression?

A lot of the symptoms of depression
can be very debilitating on the person that it is affecting, and it can lead to
a variety of physical, as well as psychological and social, problems. These
problems can affect the person’s ability to function and work normally, which
can lead to them becoming very isolated. Some of the physical symptoms include:
disturbed sleep and exhaustion, changes in appetite or weight, unexplained
aches and pains and moving or speaking more slowly than usual. Some of the psychological
symptoms include: continuous low mood, lack of motivation, having low self-esteem,
feeling anxious and having suicidal thoughts. Some of the social symptoms
include: decreased performance at work, having less contact with friends,
having new problems with home and family life and becoming less involved in old
hobbies and interests.

How does depression affect the day to day life of people who suffer with
it?

The symptoms of depression will
often have long lasting impacts as well as affecting the day to day life of
people who suffer with it. Some symptoms of depression can have a very dramatic
impact on someone’s life, for example, a common symptom of depression is having
disturbed sleep, if someone has disturbed sleep for an extended period of time
they will become physically drained, which could potentially stop them from
being able to do normal things like go to work or go out with friends. As well
as this it is common to lose motivation to go out with friends, do things they
used to enjoy and sometimes to just get out of bed in the morning, this can
have a massive effect on somebody’s life as it can lead to them becoming
extremely isolated and alone. If they distance themselves from friends, they
may begin to feel even worse and their mood may drop even lower. Not being able
to get up in the morning due to feeling so down, can pay a substantial impact
on someone’s life, as well as their future. If someone becomes unable to attend
their job it could lead to them becoming unemployed, which is a very bad
position to be in when you’re depressed as it is very likely that won’t be able
to find the motivation to apply for another job, potentially falling into a
downward spiral of financial problems on top of the other problems. One of the
most serious symptoms of depression is having suicidal thoughts or thoughts of
hurting yourself. This often only occurs during long term depression; however, it
can happen to anyone, this has the potential to take over someone’s life. For a
lot of people self-harm is a coping mechanism “Some individuals harm their
physical self to deal with emotional pain, or to break feelings of numbness by
arousing sensation”. Self-harm does not fall under the dictionary definition of
an addiction as your body will never become dependent on it and it is not
uncontrollable. It is however a behaviour that people may feel compelled to do
when they feel numb or worthless, it can be extremely hard for individuals to
restrain the urges to self-harm as it might be the only release they have from
how they feel. In some long-term cases of depression, you can go from either
feeling like you’re going through thousands of emotions at once to feeling
nothing at all. When you constantly feel nothing at all you being to feel numb
or as if you’re not really living, to feel something people often resort to
harming themselves, this can really affect day to day life as you start to rely
on it. A lot of the time, some symptoms of depression can take over your life,
even to the point people feel like all they identify as is depressed. Overall these
are only a few ways in which depression affects the day to day life of people
who suffer with it, each case is different, and some may suffer more, or less, than
others.

Are the effects of depression long lasting?

Some of the effects of depression
can be quite long lasting however there are also many effects that are only
short term. The short-term effects may only be affecting the individual’s life
during the period of depression, whereas the long-term effects could
potentially affect someone life for years after a period of depression. Some of
the short-term effects of depression include some of the most commonly known
symptoms, such as feeling low, having a lack of motivation, losing interest in
hobbies or life on the whole, as well as having irregular sleep patterns. These
effects mostly only occur when the person is going through depression, not
afterwards. However, if someone is going through a severe long-term depression,
these short-term effects could be considered long term, sometimes these effects
can last so long, to the point where the person suffering feels as if there is
no escape, sometimes leading to them committing suicide, which not only means
their life will have ended, but also can impose a dramatic effect on other people’s
lives that will last forever. Long term effects of depression can include chronic
exhaustion, this can be due to having irregular sleep patterns during a period
of depression that have then led to such exhaustion, that it is extremely hard
to catch up on any of the sleep they would have lost. Another long-term effect
can include lack of concentration. Having a lack of concentration can
potentially lead to a decreased work performance which in the long run could
eventually lead to a forced resignation or being fired. This could possibly
have a serious affect on someone’s life as if they are unable to provide for
themselves, there is a chance they could fall into serious debt.

How does depression affect the day to day lives of other people? Such as
family members and friends.

As well as affecting the person who
is dealing with depression themselves, it can also affect the people around
them, such as their parents, siblings, children and friends. For example, when
someone is depressed, the people who love them will become sad and worried
themselves as they care about them and want them to be happy, they may feel
helpless as they don’t know how to help or make things better. When people are
depressed they often don’t want to be around others all the time and isolate
themselves. This can affect their relationships dramatically. For example, it
is possible that their friends could feel rejected or unwanted, as their friend
who is depressed doesn’t seem to want to be around them anymore. This could lead
to also feeling down, as they feel as if they weren’t good enough and have lost
a friend. This can also affect family members. The parents and siblings of the
person who is depressed can end up in a constant state of worry, wondering if
they’re doing enough to help, if it’s their fault or they could just be left feeling
helpless.

How does being close with someone who is depressed affect children?

A lot of the time when children are around someone who is depressed they
don’t know how to deal with the situation. The majority of the time, people who
haven’t been depressed themselves don’t understand how depression works and the
effects that it can have on someone’s life or behaviour. Even adults don’t
understand how depression works, let alone children. Due to the children not
understanding why their friend or family member is depressed they often will
end up blaming it on themselves or acting out. Due to one of the symptoms of
depression being isolating yourself from others, when a child is in a situation
like this they feel like the person they love just doesn’t want to be around them
and can end up thinking that this is possibly because of something they have
done, but don’t know what or why their friend or family member doesn’t want to be
around them. This can lead to a mindset where the child ends up always blaming
themselves when something goes wrong. This can potentially lead to problems
with them being extremely vulnerable in the future as if anything bad happens
they end up just blaming it on themselves. When a child specifically has a parent
who is depressed, it can affect the way they develop socially and mentally,
even from birth. If a mother is depressed when she gives birth to her child she
is much less likely to play with or interact with it and due to this the baby
may become extremely anxious, ‘withdrawn and whiny, and may stop reacting to
people at all’. This is dangerous for the baby and its future development as they
would have grown up not feeling attached to their mother at all, which could
lead to them having attachment issues and the child not having the ability to
form normal relationships in the future. These issues are also commonly seen in
children whose parents are depressed during the stage of them being a toddler,
as again they would be growing up not feeling attached to their parents.

Does having a depressed parent put
children at risk?

When a
child is going through problems or is in trouble, a factor that psychologists
must consider is whether their parents are depressed. When a child’s parents
are depressed it often causes them to act out. In these situations, the parents
often tend to blame the child for the causing them to be depressed, when in
fact the vast majority of the time it is only the child not knowing how to deal
with their parents being depressed. When a child is living in a situation where
they have depressed parents, they are at risk of developing a variety of
problems and disorders that could possibly negatively affect their future. Some
of the risks and problems that they could develop include; Attention Deficit
Disorder (ADD), adolescent depression, poor school performance, bad behaviour and
an increased number of visits to accident and emergency (A). If the
parent is able to get help and get over depression and is back to having the
ability to look after their child and rebuild a healthy relationship then the
child may have a good outlook on life, knowing that things get better. Whereas
if the parent is not able to get the help they need, the child can continue to
act out and things could potentially get progressively worse. Due to not
knowing how to get attention in a positive way they will end up badly behaved
and the due to having bad, uncontrolled behaviour it is likely they won’t be
able to join in with other children at school and have their grades reflecting
their behaviour. They also will not know how they’re supposed to calm
themselves down or look after themselves, when they have outburst of anger and
bad behaviour, which could lead to substance abuse later in life. As well as
this, due to their parent isolating themselves during a state of depression,
the child may feel like they’re unloved, unwanted and unworthy. This is a very
bad state of mind to have, especially at such a young age where the brain has
not yet fully developed, it can lead to problems with relationships and trust
in the future and can also contribute to adolescent depression.
