Environmental have affected earth for a long time.

Environmental Problems: How it Affects Everyone!Trevor DostalMs. Ivey Research Paper December 22 2017 The earth’s environment is a very vital component to all life survival on it. If humans do not take care of it, the earth will not take care of them. Humans harm the environment every day and most seem to not notice or care. For example, pollution, littering, drilling in habitats and deforestation are just some of the things humans cause. The earth is kind of like hotels, if they do not take care of it, no one would want to live in it. The environment is very important to all life on earth, if no one takes care of it, it will not provide efficiently.First subcategory of environmental problems and the biggest one, is pollution. It is no thing else’s fault except for humans. Here are some statistics to put how bad pollution is in perspective; “Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year.” (Facts) “Pollution is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people. That is comparable to global diseases like malaria and HIV.” (Facts) “Approximately 40% of the lakes in America are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life, or swimming.” (Facts) Those are just small problems with pollution, there are much bigger that have affected earth for a long time. Besides water, earth’s air also gets polluted too. “People who live in places with high levels of air pollutants have a 20% higher risk of death from lung cancer than people who live in less-polluted areas.” (Facts) Other than pollution there are many other things wrong with the earth’s environment that needs awareness. Also, carbon emissions are a form of polluting, since it is polluting the atmosphere, and that is causing rising temperatures and it is destroying the ozone layer. That affects the environment because cold places are now heating up killing animals in colder regions.A problem that adds onto pollution is improper waste disposal. People think when they pick up trash and put it into the trash can they helped the environment which is not always true. The trash the dump trucks pick up just go right into a landfill and does not always stay there. Lighter trash is sometimes blown away, and liquid trash can leak into water systems and the environment. “Batteries are an environmental hazard. The acid leaches not only into the soil but also goes into the groundwater. Disposing of them also creates their own problems as the lead is likely to remain in the ash and be released in the air.” (WWF) Also some trash will release methane which also contributes to the greenhouse effect. Which keeps temperatures rising. Some people think burning the waste is the solution, but it is not. “Incinerating waste also causes problems, because plastics tend to produce toxic substances, such as dioxins, when they are burnt.” (Environmental)Animal extinction is also another big problem the earth is facing. The food chain goes in a circle, if it loses too much population of one animal, it might gain more and lose more population of another species. Everything in the environment is connected, so if one thing goes wrong they all go wrong. “99% of currently threatened species are at risk from human activities, primarily those driving habitat loss, introduction of exotic species, and global warming.” (Facts) Also, if humans keep going on the road they are now, soon there will be less and less species. “As many as 30 to 50 percent of all species are possibly heading toward extinction by mid-century.” (Facts) As mentioned earlier, animals rely on other animals, so if 50 percent go so might the rest of them. For example, if bees go extinct, the flower population will decrease because the flower population depend on the bees pollinating, and since the flower population decreases, so might the animals that feed on it. Then since animals are going extinct, humans may slowly and slowly run out of food. Consequently, humans might have to rely only on vegetation to eat. Moreover, deforestation is also a big environmental topic. Companies, especially wood marketing companies, cut down millions of trees a year. Thousands of animals are left without homes. “3.5 billion to 7 billion trees are cut down per year.” (Network) That is the whole population of the US times 11. Also since trees take in carbon, more carbon emissions are entered into the atmosphere destroying more and more of the ozone layer. Deforestation not only affects animals but humans as well. “Forest destruction pushes frontline communities and Indigenous peoples out of their homes, violating their human rights, their land rights all while destroying their way of life.” (Network) As well as that, deforestation creates a loss of biodiversity that lives in a certain region. In addition to, the world is burning up all of its natural resources (fossil fuels). Mainly used for energy. “Fossil fuels currently account for about 90 percent of the world’s energy consumption.” (WWF) The world has developed many environmental healthy ways to use energy, but still does not use them. Besides using up all the resources they are not even good to the environment. They release tons of carbon when burned and they cost money to buy. Sure, people would have to pay for the wind turbines or solar panels to be put up, but after that it is all natural and free. Then the fossil fuels cost money to dig up and when they dig them up, they harm the environment also. “Renewable sources have the advantage of producing lower emissions of carbon dioxide, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.” (WWF)Another man-made problem is overpopulation. The average families nowadays have 5-6 kids. Then their kids have more kids. “The last decade has seen more young people in the world than ever before, creating unprecedented potential for economic and social progress.” (Edwards) The population just keeps increasing.  “By the of the century, the world’s population might be as high as 17 billion or as low as 7 billion, according to the most recent UN estimates.” (Edwards) Because the population is increasing, there is more to provide for. One, being energy, countries having to burn up more fossil fuels. Two, being food, farmers have to expand, which may mean to cut down more trees. There are some smaller problems in the environment that could make a big difference later. One like water acidification. Since the world does not take care of water sources, humans now have problems like acid rain. Also, some acid is being leaked into the ocean killing marine life. “Ocean acidity has increased by about 30% since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and if CO2 emissions continue to grow, the rate of acidification will accelerate in the coming decades.” (Ocean) This is another example of how everything in the environment is linking together. Acid water not only affects marine life but humans as well. Acid rain can be a devastation to farmers, because acid rain does not go good with plants. It could harm a whole field of vegetation for a farmer, that means less food for people.Lastly, is erosion. There are many human factors that go into erosion. Such as, over cropping, overgrazing, and deforestation. Overgrazing occurs when farmers buy too many animals for their farm, and the animals just tear up the ground when they eat. “The animals damage the soil surface by eating the vegetation and either digging into wet soil or compacting dry soil with their hooves.” (How) Then over cropping, all the vegetation just takes mineral out the soil, it all goes bad. The soil will eventually become less fertile and dry. All those factors lead to desertification. That is just one of the types of erosion on earth, there are many more to come.Other than all the negative information, here is some positive information in a way one can prevent all of this. Pollution is very easy to prevent. Most pollution comes from factories, all humans have to do is start making eco-friendly factories, also more electric cars. Deforestation is easily prevented bys leaving alone natural trees, and making one fenced in dedicated tree farm. Erosion is prevented by not littering, and properly managing landfills. Acidification can also be prevented by not littering and properly managing landfills. Using natural resources can be prevented by using natural energy. Everything can be prevented is just a matter of if humans try to prevent it. Also, just to recycle everything one can will also benefit multiple things. “Recycling and composting prevented 85 million tons of material away from being disposed of in 2010, up from 18 million tons in 1980.” (Facts)All in all, the environment is very important to all life on earth, if none takes care of it will not provide efficiently. Humans only have one earth like this. If they do not take care of it, it will eventually die. Humans need to take action now before it is too late. Some factors are already on the verge of being unfixable. Earth is important, please take care of it.
