A main key term that will be used in this essay is “Auteur signature” which means when a filmmaker has their own certain style and stamp that’s unique to them that you can see throughout most of their films.Spike Lee as an AuteurSpike Lee has worked on a total of 51 films, and with most of them having his classic auteur signature of tackling difficult subject matters related to racism to the African Americans in America during the 1950’s – Current Day while depicting the reality of it with slang, cultural nuance, love, sex, drugs, and violence. However, many critics have stated that they believe this is what holds Spike Lee back as a director as they believe that if he was to venture out into other film subjects he would gain a lot more attention and become one of the best directors out there, however, Lee is adamant about his work always eager to enlighten people on what it was like to live as an African American as well as giving Black actors their first shot at acting with actors such as Marin Lawrence, Laurence Fishburne, Wesley Snipes, and Halle Berry all got their acting debuts in spike lee films.Do the Right Thing (1989)Do the Right Thing was made in 1989 as an American comedy-drama film which was produced, written directed all by Spike Lee while also playing the main character in the film known as “Mookie”. The film’s plot revolves around a Brooklyn neighbourhood during one of the hottest days in America history while racial tension between an Italian family-run pizza parlour and the community builds up which leads to a mass riot on the streets outside the pizza parlour. It has received both critical and commercial success and has received a number of awards & nominations, one of which is an Academy Award nomination for Lee for Best Original Screenplay, another is one for Best Support Actor for Aiello’s character Sal, the father of Pino and Vito & owner of the pizzeria and is listed by many as one of the greatest films of all time and has even been deemed by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” and was even selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.  The film also had some prominent actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Danny Aiello, Ruby Dee, Bull Nunn & many more.
