The headquarters are located in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft develops, licenses, supports, manufactures, and sells computer software, consumer electronic products, personal computers, and IT services. Microsoft Windows is the best known software products among the line of operating systems. Microsoft also provide software like the Microsoft office suite, the Edge and Internet Explorer web browsers. Flagship hardware products of this company contains the Xbox video game consoles and the Microsoft Surface tablet line up. In the year of 2016, it became the world’s largest IT software maker by revenue, and one of the world’s most valuable companies. “Microsoft” is a portmanteau of the words “microcomputer” and “software”.
Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft on April 4, 1975. Their aim is just to develop and sell some basic interpreters for the Altair8800. Later this company expand to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid of 1980s, followed by Microsoft Windows. As of 2015, Microsoft is market-dominant in the IBM PC-compatible operating system market and the office software suite market, although it has lost the majority of the overall operating system market to Android. The company also produces a wide range of other consumer and enterprise software for desktops and servers, including Internet search like “with Bing”, the digital services market like “MSN”, mixed reality “HoloLens”, cloud computing “Azure” and software development “Microsoft Visual Studio”.
