Reducing Death in Rural Areas with Electronics    Akhil Baidya          Stoller Middle School          AbstractAlmost 100,000 people died from untreated diseases in 2014, 11,000 of them from respiratory diseases. Many Rural residents don’t have the reassurance of a safe life. There should be a way to use technology to create a solution for this problem. Many have used a device called the digital stethoscope, which improves the quality of a stethoscope and can store sound. By using this information, one can say that if a device is made it should be able to communicate between distances using a CPU that translates languages and can pick up sound between 20 to 1200 Hz.  About 11,000 Rural Americans died from untreated respiratory diseases in 2014 (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 1). Respiratory disease is one of the major causes of death in America, and anywhere else. The numbers have only been increasing. There are many problems with accessing healthcare, from communication to transportation. Sometimes unavailability can be so fatal, people die a preventable death. If healthcare was available to more people, the almost 46 million Rural Americans could be reassured of a safe long life  (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 3). How can technology help cure respiratory diseases in rural areas? There are many problems with accessing healthcare in general. Unavailability of doctors, poverty, and lack of transportation are all contributing problems with accessing healthcare in Rural areas (NRHA, n.d., para. 1 and 2). Healthcare also has its own barriers of what it can do. Some barriers of healthcare include cost of care, no insurance coverage, lack of availability, and lack of cultural competency (Driscrimination against races) (Access to Health Services, n.d., para. 3). Another problem that largely contributes with the lack of healthcare in many Rural areas is the lack of Communication since many people cannot even inform healthcare providers that they are sick or dying (Ali, A. et al., n.d., para. 2). The problem with accessing healthcare causes death worldwide; people cannot treat themselves because of discrimination, communication, or lack of transportation and more.Low accessibility of healthcare can lead to death in rural areas. 11,000 Rural Americans died from chronic lower respiratory disease in 2014, chronic lower disease caused mostly by smoking (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 1). Rural residents are in more risk of death because of have higher rates of cigarette smoking ,which was stated before, could cause respiratory diseases, high blood pressure which could cause cardiac diseases, and obesity which also causes cardiac diseases. Also, there is less physical activity and seatbelt use, there is  a lot of poverty, less access to health care, and most Rural residents have low health insurance (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 3). These all could contribute on mortality rates in rural areas. Some solutions to help Rural residents are to screen patients for high blood pressure, increase early detection of cancer, and encourage physical activity and healthy eating (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 8). Many of these solutions are not being used lately. Many factors contribute to the deaths of Rural people, such as unhealthy behaviors and low accessibility of healthcare.Electronics (such as a digital stethoscope) can be used to help save these people in rural areas before they die. Certain features will be used on making a device that works. While making a device that can communicate and store information, the device should include a memory and a processing unit which controls communication locate info, notifications, and transmittion (Methods, apparatus, and systems for exchanging information between excavators and other entities associated with underground facility locating and marking operations, n.d., para. 42). One device that was made was a digital stethoscope. A digital stethoscope’s most vital components are the sound transducer, the audio codec electronics, and the speakers. A digital stethoscope is used to improve the quality of a usual stethoscope (Introduction to Digital Stethoscopes and Electrical Component Selection Criteria, n.d., para. 4). A stethoscope must be sensitive to cardiac sound in the 20 Hz to 400 Hz range and pulmonary sound in the 100 Hz to 1200 Hz range (Introduction to Digital Stethoscopes and Electrical Component Selection Criteria, n.d., para. 8). Using this, it can be found that if a device was made, it should include a CPU (the brains of the computer) which can communicate between long distances and it should be able to take sounds in between 20 to 200 Hz for Cardiac sounds, and 100 to 1200 Hz for pulmonary sounds. However, can specific parts be used to make the device much more cheaper? As conclusion, specific elements of electronics can be used to help cure Rural patients.Electronics are a primary solution to the thousands of deaths in Rural Areas from respiratory diseases a year. Low accessibility of healthcare can lead to deaths in many areas. The most affected would be Rural areas becuase of their habits and their very low communiction to healthcare providers. Several thousand people died from one of the 5 leading causes of death, respiratory disease (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 1). Almost 70,000 people died in Rural areas in 2014 (CDC Newsroom, 2017, para. 1). From this it can be found how bad the situation is with healthcare. It might be possible to use electronics to slow down the mortality rates from deadly diseases (mainly respiratory diseases). By building devices to help and finding simple solutions that anyone can take, the thousands of people living in Rural Areas could be reassured of a safe life.        ReferencesAccess to Health Services.
